Pope Gregory IX on Contraception

Decretals - 1234 AD

Fr Columba Ryan OPIf anyone, to satisfy his lust or in meditated hatred, does something to a man or woman or gives them something to drink so that he cannot generate or she conceive, or the offspring be born—let him be considered a murderer (Decretals, Book V, 12, 5).

If conditions are set against the substance of marriage—for example, if one says to the other, “I contract with you if you avoid offspring” – the matrimonial contract, in spite of mutual consent, lacks effect (Decretals, Book IV, 5, 7).
